If you’re having trouble seeing, your mom or dad can take you for an eye exam. Most kids get a regular check-up with an eye doctor once a year too.

When you go in for your exam, you’ll be asked to read from an eye chart. This is the one that has the different letters in different sizes. The doctor will ask you to cover one eye and read a line then, cover the other and read another line. They might also ask you to look at some text up close, like you would if you were reading a book. These kinds of tests can measure how well you see up close and from far away.

If you do need glasses or contact lenses, the doctor will use a special machine that lets you try a few different “prescriptions” until you find the one that gives you the clearest vision. The machine looks like a giant pair of glasses with dials and knobs that can be switched quickly.

As they switch the dials, the doctor may say something like, “Is this better…or is this better?” Tell them which one looks clearest. If you can’t really tell, you should say so. Remember, it’s not a pass or fail test. This one is made to get you the best prescription so your vision will be as good as it can be

If you need glasses, you may have been told you are nearsighted or farsighted. These are two very common “refractive” problems and the two often get confused.

When you’re nearsighted it means that you can see stuff that’s near, like the TV or a book. But, you have trouble seeing stuff that’s far away like street signs or the chalk board at school.

If you’re farsighted, you can see stuff that’s far away, but you have trouble seeing things that are up close, like the text in a book.

Another refractive problem is called astigmatism (pronounced: uh-stig-muh-tih-zum). This is when the cornea is an uneven shape, causing images to distort and making things look blurry.

Glasses or contact lenses can correct these common refractive vision problems because they allow the eye to focus light in the right spot on the retina – the spot that produces the clearest image. If you need glasses or contacts, your doctor will give you a prescription that tells the people who make glasses what kind of lenses you need for the best vision.

During tough economic times many “non-critical” things get put on hold. Priorities get shifted to the back burner and many ‘to do’s’ become “I will get to them when I can”. Do not let eye care be one of the things you put off.

As we talk with other health care professionals, one of the trends we have all noticed is moms sacrificing their own healthcare in favor of getting their children’s needs taken care of first. As admirable as this may seem, this neglect can create long term problems which cost more in the long run. So we are offering a special MOM-CARE program.

MOM-CARE – We don’t want moms putting their eye care on the back burner, so we are making this special offer: Mom’s get their eye exam free when they come in with their children. We have a pediatric optometrist on staff every Monday who can accommodate everyone 1 year old and above. When you bring your child in for their eye exam, you can have your eyes checked at no additional charge

You could be 10 years old or 100 years old, the importance of maintianing great ocular health will remain the same.

Children usually change RX every 9-12 months as they grow. In additions kids need a professional to monitor changes and health issues because they may not recognize a change.

Patients between 20-40 years old who wear Rx need to be checked annually for RX changes. Not only is this for good health, State law requires contact lens wearers to hava an annual exam due to the fact that contact RX expires every 12 months.

Over 40? You should be just as concerned about your ocular health. Those individules over 40 need to be monitored for Near Vision Changes.

More specifically if you are over 50 annual checks are needed to detect Cataracts, Claucoma, and Macular Degineration.

We are very fortunate to be able to provide you a state of the art examination that is comprehensive, accurate and free from dilating drops.

We are able to evaluate the inside of your eye simply by taking a digital picture without your pupils being dilated all day. This technology allows us to help screen for Diabetes, Macular Degeneration, Cataracts, Glaucoma, Hypertension, etc.

We know that a comprehensive examination is not complete without a very thorough view of the ENTIRE eye; both inside and out.

We know you are very busy with summer vacations and recreational activities, but there is no better time than now to schedule your comprehensive annual exam. The exam will take less than 30 minutes but the benefits will last a lifetime.

Vision is a dominant process in the growth, development and daily performance of children. In fact, EIGHTY PERCENT OF WHAT STUDENTS LEARN IS THROUGH VISION. And yet, 86 percent of all school-age children have not had a complete eye examination – Ever!

The American Optometric Association encourages parents to have their children’s eyes examined three times prior to starting school: at 6 months, 3 years and before starting kindergarten.

These exams monitor eye development and may prevent conditions that may become irreversible in later years, such as amblyopia or ‘lazy eye.’
