Protect Your Eyes From the Sun
As many of you will be heading somewhere warm for spring break, you not only need to protect your skin from the sun, but you need to protect your eyes as well. This recent article that was published in Medical News Today and it focuses on how to protect your eyes from the sun and also what can happen if you don’t protect your eyes from the sun.
Help a Neighbor Program
Another serious issue, faced by a growing number of members of our community is the loss of employment and corresponding loss of medical benefits. As part of this community, we want to help make good eye care accessible.
HELP-A-NEIGHBOR – We are looking to help out those in NEED. We will donate one free exam EACH DAY this year to families who are feeling the economic pinch. Do you know of a family in need? You can anonymously nominate your friends, neighbors, and relatives who NEED assistance right now. Please
email us the name of someone you know needs eye care but, because of their current their job situation they are delaying proper eye care. Again, thank you for your continued trust and confidence in our ability to serve you now and in the future.
EyeCare during a recession? Mom’s deserve the best.
During tough economic times many “non-critical” things get put on hold. Priorities get shifted to the back burner and many ‘to do’s’ become “I will get to them when I can”. Do not let eye care be one of the things you put off.
As we talk with other health care professionals, one of the trends we have all noticed is moms sacrificing their own healthcare in favor of getting their children’s needs taken care of first. As admirable as this may seem, this neglect can create long term problems which cost more in the long run. So we are offering a special MOM-CARE program.
MOM-CARE – We don’t want moms putting their eye care on the back burner, so we are making this special offer: Mom’s get their eye exam free when they come in with their children. We have a pediatric optometrist on staff every Monday who can accommodate everyone 1 year old and above. When you bring your child in for their eye exam, you can have your eyes checked at no additional charge
Dr. Ciano’s Interview With Indianapolis Star
Dr. Jeremy Ciano, an optometrist with RevolutionEyes in Carmel, discusses diabetic retinopathy with the Indianapolis Star.
Question: How common is diabetic retinopathy?
Answer: It’s the No. 1 cause of preventable blindness in the United States. (According to the
American Diabetes Association, 12,000 to 24,000 new cases of blindness due to diabetes occur
each year. Diabetes causes about 8 percent of the cases of legal blindness in the United States.)
Diabetes affects the small blood vessels of the body, and the eye is the only place in the human
body where we can see the blood vessels in a natural state without doing an invasive procedure.
Sometimes there are tiny blood vessels that have leaks, called a dot-and-blot hemorrhage. If we
see a dot-and-blot hemorrhage, we know the sugar levels are not under control.
Love Your Eyes – Wear Sunglasses Year Round
Love is in the air. It’s time to send your V-cards and wishes to those loved and adored. We encourage our patients to give a valentine to their eyes this February -a pair of sunglasses. The sun’s damaging effects are a concern year round regardless of the outside temperature.
In addition to visible light, the sun also gives off ultraviolet radiation: UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C. The earth’s ozone layer naturally absorbs UV-C radiation, leaving our sunglasses to protect us from UV-A and UV-B rays. Studies indicate that long-term exposure to ultraviolet radiation can contribute to the development of cataracts and macular degeneration.
Children are particularly susceptible to the sun’s damaging rays because they typically spend more time outdoors without sunglasses. The effects of UV radiation are cumulative, so it’s important to develop good protection habits early in life.
The sun’s brightness can create a disabling glare that interferes with comfortable driving vision. This glare occurs on both cloudy and sunny days. Especially on snowy days, sunglasses can reduce the reflected glare. The best protection against the sun’s damaging UV rays and blocking glare is consistent use of sunglasses.
Give your family the gift of lifelong healthy vision with a great pair of sunglasses-your eyes will love you for it.
Tips from RevolutionEyes
We recommend an annual exam for Ocular Health check-ups. This can prevent or catch many problems within the eye before it gets too serious.
An annual exam will ensure crisp clear vision, but of paramount importance is the health evaluation. When it comes to age brackets, gender or previous health issues, we have no restrictions or limitations.
Disposable Contacts Great for Part-Time Users!
Although there are many advantages that daily disposables can provide, the best opportunity is for patients who only want to wear contacts on a part time basis:
- Weekend-Warriors for golf, tennis, softball, etc.
- Seasonal allergy sufferers
- Special Events – weddings, proms, social events/dinners
- Vacations- No need for solutions and cases
- International Travelers- don’t know about the water abroad?
- Athletics for small children not ready for full time wear yet
- The list goes on and on, depending on how creative you want to be. It is the ultimate in flexible wear schedules and convenience.
Daily disposable lenses are comfortable, extremely healthy, and at less than a dollar a day, they are also very economical.
There has never been a better opportunity to try contacts, even if only on a part time basis or for a specific event.
What is Allergic Conjunctivitis?
The final and probably most common version of pink eye is allergic conjunctivitis. This is most common during the spring and fall.
Allergic conjunctivitis has a trademark itching component along with redness, irritation, and tearing. There are many types of prescription ocular drops to help get people through this rough time/season.
All three forms of conjunctivitis have similar properties and symptoms, but with careful testing and monitoring can be differentiated.
So the next time anyone in your family comes down with ‘pink eye’ make sure to get them to your family optometrist for the proper diagnosis and management.
What is Viral Conjunctivitis?
Viral conjunctivitis is usually caused by someone rubbing their eyes after having contact with someone or something associated with having the common cold or flu.
Hallmark signs of viral conjunctivitis include redness, inflammation, and a watery or clear discharge.
Supportive therapy with artificial tears and good ocular hygiene are the best and fastest ways to let viral ‘pink’ eye run its course.
Can’t Go Wrong with Disposable Contacts!
One of the healthiest and easiest types of lenses is the daily disposable contact. Yes, that is correct…wear it for one day and then throw it away. No cleaning. No solution costs. No storage hassles. Daily disposable contacts offer the ultimate ease of use and freedom in a contact lens.
Not only are daily disposables great because of their convenience, they are also one of the safest and healthiest ways to wear lenses.
They are the thinnest and lightest contacts available, which also makes them the most comfortable. They are great for patients suffering from dry eyes as well seasonal allergies.
Because there is essentially no buildup on the lenses within one day, allergy sufferers do great in this lens type. In fact, most patients cannot even feel them in their eyes.
