Protect your eyes for better health
Summer is rapidly approaching, and everyone is eager to get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather. However, spending too much time in the sun can cause an increase in macular degeneration, the number one cause of vision loss among older people. Macular degeneration leads to opaque deposits on the retina, which limits your vision. There are very few treatments for this condition.
Luckily, it’s easy to reduce your risk for this ailment. Just make sure that you protect your eyes when you go outside: wear a hat, or better yet, wear sunglasses. Make sure that you choose sunglasses that block at least 99% of UVB rays, and at least 95% of UVA rays. These small steps can make a big difference later on!

Myopia affects America 2
A recent study by The National Eye Institute has determined there is a dramatic increase in cases of myopia or nearsightedness. With more than 40% of the population affected, myopia has grown to epidemic proportions.
While the study does not directly identify specific causes, experts seem to agree that more time spent indoors, without natural light, and an increase in “near work” texting, video games, computer work, all play a role.
While there is no cure, experts recommend annual eye exams to maintain your eye health is critical.

What happens at an eye exam?
If you’re having trouble seeing, your mom or dad can take you for an eye exam. Most kids get a regular check-up with an eye doctor once a year too.
When you go in for your exam, you’ll be asked to read from an eye chart. This is the one that has the different letters in different sizes. The doctor will ask you to cover one eye and read a line then, cover the other and read another line. They might also ask you to look at some text up close, like you would if you were reading a book. These kinds of tests can measure how well you see up close and from far away.
If you do need glasses or contact lenses, the doctor will use a special machine that lets you try a few different “prescriptions” until you find the one that gives you the clearest vision. The machine looks like a giant pair of glasses with dials and knobs that can be switched quickly.
As they switch the dials, the doctor may say something like, “Is this better…or is this better?” Tell them which one looks clearest. If you can’t really tell, you should say so. Remember, it’s not a pass or fail test. This one is made to get you the best prescription so your vision will be as good as it can be

What’s the difference between nearsightedness and farsightedness?
If you need glasses, you may have been told you are nearsighted or farsighted. These are two very common “refractive” problems and the two often get confused.
When you’re nearsighted it means that you can see stuff that’s near, like the TV or a book. But, you have trouble seeing stuff that’s far away like street signs or the chalk board at school.
If you’re farsighted, you can see stuff that’s far away, but you have trouble seeing things that are up close, like the text in a book.
Another refractive problem is called astigmatism (pronounced: uh-stig-muh-tih-zum). This is when the cornea is an uneven shape, causing images to distort and making things look blurry.
Glasses or contact lenses can correct these common refractive vision problems because they allow the eye to focus light in the right spot on the retina – the spot that produces the clearest image. If you need glasses or contacts, your doctor will give you a prescription that tells the people who make glasses what kind of lenses you need for the best vision.
Why do we have tears?
Have you ever been playing and gotten poked in the eye or got some dirt stuck in there? What happens? Your eyes make tears. But why?
It’s to protect themselves. You can think of tears as the eyes’ own bathing system. The lacrimal (pronounced lah-kruh-mul) glands, just above the eye, make the tears every time you blink. The tears help wash away dust, tiny germs, or other particles that don’t belong in the eye. They also keep your eye from drying out.
And, if you get sad, scared, or upset, your brain tells the eyes to make you cry and the lacrimal glands made many, many tears. Depending on how many tears your eyes make, they can just fill your eyes or they might trickle down your face. The tear ducts that drain the tears can’t keep up and they overflow.
You can keep your eyes from watering and protect them by wearing goggles when working with tools or playing sports like racquetball or hockey.
