Project 3/50

I came across this site the other day and I really liked its philosophy.

What if everyone did this? Would the local economy get a huge boost? Or is it just an idealist philosophy.

To follow through with the 3/50 project – I would have to narrow down three independently owned businesses that I really couldn’t live without.

Top three local businesses I’d miss:

Gelato DaVinci in the Clay Terrace Mall, a family-owned business with great coffee and the BEST gelato in the city.

L. Severson Photography, a great artist in town.  She really knows her craft and takes a lot of pride building up her community.

Mama Corolla’s in Broad Ripple… the BEST Italian food in the city!!!

If I could pick one more … I’d pick AMB Landscaping. He takes meticulous care of the lawns in our neighborhood.  He named his family business after his daughter Alissa Marie Bandejas and moved here from NJ just to better himself and his family.  Works EXTREMELY hard to make sure his clients are all ‘raving fans’.

What are your three places?

The Sun’s Effect On Your Eyes

It’s that time of year again.  You will be outside enjoying the sunny weather.  Are you taking the time to protect your eyes while doing so?  We found great tips from Acuvue on how the sun effects your eyes and also how to protect your eyes from the sun.

The first fact states, “Sunlight is at its most intense between the hours of 10 in the morning to 2 in the afternoon. That means ultraviolet exposure is the most dangerous then.”

You can read all of the facts and tips here.

High-Definition Vision With Glasses?

We have HDTV and Blue-Ray DVD’s, so why not High-Definition Glasses? The answer is, we DO have that equivalent technology. Free Form technology is here from a few special lens manufactures around the world and we are very proud to offer them to our patients.

What is the difference?  The enhanced vision is found for two different reasons.

#1:  The lenses are digitally fabricated by a computer instead of being ground by a technician.  The precision and accuracy is greatly enhanced by the computer’s ability to create exact specifications.

#2:  The prescription is now etched onto the INSIDE surface of the glasses instead of the outside surface.
This small difference in prescription placement is HUGE.  Based on the keyhole principle;  the closer the prescription is to your eyes, the wider your field of view is.  Most people have experienced the ‘swim and sway’ distortion associated with no-line bifocals.  This has been greatly minimized with the advent of putting the Rx on the inside surface of the glasses.  In fact, some of these new digital no-line bifocals can give up to a 30% wider field of view.

We hope this will encourage the few who have not been able to ‘adjust’ into their no-line bifocals in the past, and will give others the confidence of high definition vision when it comes time to update your prescription at your annual eye exam.

Caring for your Contact Lenses

A recent article on WebMD teaches you how to care for your contact lenses and give better health to your eyes.

Follow these guidelines for good contact lens care to extend the life of your contact lenses, and protect the safety and health of your eyes.

1. Always wash your hands with warm water and soap before handling your contact lenses or before touching your eyes. Any residue from lotions, soaps, or chemicals may stick to the contact lens, causing pain, irritation, or blurred vision when they are in your eyes. Dry your hands with a clean towel.

Common Myths About Vision In Children

Lately we have been focusing on the importance of having your child’s vision checked starting at a young age.  We found a great article on myths about a child’s vision in the Eye Topics Newsletter.  You can check out one myth below.  To read all of the myths check out this website!

5.  Myth: Wearing glasses means my child has “weak” eyes.

Truth: Glasses are worn mainly to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. In these conditions, the eye muscles are not “weak.” Rather, the eyes do not focus properly because of the curvature of the lens and/or the depth or shallowness of the eye. Glasses are worn to correct an improper focus.
